Colorado has some unique challenges when it comes to protecting homes from the elements.

Our climate swings wildly between warm and cold, sometimes within the same season. It’s not uncommon to have 50-degree days in the thick of winter while also having below-freezing temperatures in early summer.

Also, our precipitation is equally as unpredictable. Snowstorms, hail, and heavy rain can come at any time, which presents yet another challenge for determining which roofing material to choose.

At Severy Creek Roofing, we’ve worked on residential roofs of all shapes, sizes, and styles. And, we’ve seen first-hand what roofing materials work best to prevent leaks and help to protect homes from the elements throughout the year.

In all of our years of working on residential roofs throughout the state, we’ve found the following roofing material categories to do the best job of providing superior protection for the longest amount of time.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Without a doubt, asphalt shingle roofs make up the vast majority of residential roofing materials chosen for Colorado homes.

This is because, generally speaking, asphalt shingles are fairly inexpensive while also being very durable and effective at protecting the home from water intrusion (when installed correctly!).

But, not all asphalt shingles are created equal. There are a few categories to choose from, including:

  • 3-tab or 4-tab. 3- and 4-tab asphalt shingles are the least expensive and most common asphalt shingles found on Colorado homes. They can last upwards of 20 years, and they’re fairly easy to install.
  • Dimensional. Dimensional asphalt shingles add a bit more depth to the aesthetic of the roof, giving a more wood shake-like look. These shingles can be more expensive than 3- or 4-tab asphalt shingles (about 15% more, in most cases), but they’re as durable or even more durable.
  • Luxury. Luxury asphalt shingles are generally thicker, broader, and bolder in design when compared with standard asphalt shingles. This makes them roughly twice as expensive, but they look incredible and last for up to 30 years.

Dollar-for-dollar, asphalt shingles are a great investment in most residential roofs here in Colorado. But, they’re not the only option.

Tiled Roof Alternatives

Some Colorado homes are perfect candidates for tiled roofs. A properly installed tiled roof can last for up to 100 years (or even longer!), and the design of tiled roofs is highly desirable.

Make no mistake: tiled roofs are much more expensive than asphalt shingle roofs. But, a tiled roof looks great, lasts a long time, and is often backed by impressively long manufacturer warranties.

Some of the more common tiled roofs found in Colorado include:

  • Ceramic
  • Clay
  • Stone/Slate
  • Metal (copper, steel, zinc)
  • Concrete

The tricky feature of most tile roofs in Colorado is that they require extensive knowledge to install. Only highly experienced and well-trained roofers like those at Severy Creek Roofing should be trusted to install a tiled roof in Colorado. There’s too much to risk in choosing anyone else!

Tiled roofs are algae-resistant, low-maintenance, and very energy efficient. This makes them a great choice for many homeowners, assuming their budgets will allow for the increased expense.

Cedar Shake Roofing

Of all the residential roof styles found in Colorado, cedar shake roofing is perhaps the most impressive-looking.

This type of roof involves the use of specially sized and coated cedar wood shingles that provide a natural beauty that simply cannot be achieved with any other material.

Cedar shingles aren’t just beautiful. They’re also very durable, resistant to extreme weather, and quite energy efficient.

However, they’re not without their drawbacks. Most cedar roofs are prohibitively expensive, and like tiled roofs, they require unique expertise to install correctly. Lastly, cedar shake roofing does require ongoing maintenance, which adds to the long-term ownership cost.
